9 x 12" Strathmore canvas paper. Grumbacher Pentalic woodless HB pencil. A co-worker lent me this pencil, which I'd never before tried. It glides easily and can quickly put down a tone, but can't get very dark on this paper. Done on Sept. 23, '08.
12 x 9" Strathmore canvas paper. Wolff BB pencil. The model wore a nice, old-fashioned outfit and put an interesting twist in his pose. Again, hard to get darks on this type of paper with this normally dark pencil. Done Sept. 16, '08.
12 x 9" Canson watercolor paper. Wolff carbon pencil and gray wash. The model came with turn-of-the-1900's French fieldworkers' undergarments. This and the one following are eight-minute sketches.
I made this drawing of a certain local celebrity on a bad hair day from a newspaper photo sometime in 2007. I've had it taped to the wall in my work space at my job and it seems to get comments from co-workers. Image size roughly 10 x 8"; color pencil and Tombow gray wash on animation paper.
Wolff carbon B pencil on Strathmore 9 x 12" canvas paper. I've been trying out different papers and media, and the carbon pencil leaves an interesting effect on this canvas-embossed paper. Almost like a wash. Hard to get darks.
This was done on site in June of '05 during a family trip to Ireland. The fifteenth-c. castle crowns the highest point on the island of Inishere, the smallest of the Aran Islands in County Clare. I got off my rented bike to sketch the ruined castle, while a crowd of Irish teens clambered over the ramparts. They were very friendly and polite, and told us about their national game of Irish football, played with something that looks like a hockey stick. 9 x 12", pen and wash on cream-colored paper in Cachet spiral-bound sketchbook.
Pigma Micron 05 pen on 9 x 12" Canson watercolor paper. I was trying a new pen and paper for this sketch. The ink is water soluble and can be turned into a wash with a brush and water. Wish the drawing did more justice to the model...
Our model had a fun costume. I wasn't satisfied with the drawings, but wanted to post something to show that I have been drawing a little. Fountain pen on 9 x 12" Strathmore canvas paper.
9" x 12". Fountain pen and sepia ink in ecru spiral-bound sketchbook. This sketch shows a scene from the great old-time music gathering held at Clifftop, W.Va., every August. We stayed at the campsite of friends who brought a very organized kitchen setup. The drawing shows the hostess, Hilarie, preparing a meal with the participation of four little camp girls and the mother of three of the helpers. As always, I wish I had sketched more.
8" x 11". Fountain pen and sepia ink on Strathmore charcoal paper. The model's pose, although simple, had a nice, subtle shift of weight onto one foot.
12" x 9". Fountain pen and sepia ink on Strathmore charcoal paper. The model is one of our favorites at the session and likes to bring an unusual assortment of accessories for the costumed poses.
12" x 9". Fountain pen on ecru paper in spiral-bound sketchbook. An old butternut tree on the farm belonging to my sister and her husband on Big Wheeling Creek in West Virginia. Sketch done in August of '04.
The tree is still alive and healthy in the summer of '08.
Pen and ink sketch of Mel Durham from summer 2006. 12 x 9", Namiki fountain pen on Strathmore vellum. Sketch of Gene, Mel, and Patty from summer 2006. 12 x 9", Namiki fountain pen on Strathmore vellum.
